To Be A Woman

To be a woman in ancient Greece was to be, in blunt terms, a breeder. They weren't quite equal with men, not even in Sparta where the women were taught the art of war. In Greece, women were the child-bearers with no voice, no mind, and her only value was in that she was obedient, lovely, and a good child-bearer.

It's not quite that they were abused, but more like they were completely overlooked. Women had no part in politics, in entertainment, in war, in pretty much anything that their husbands were able to.

You blog posting seems to be related to mine. I agree with the idea of women being not treated well in ancient Greece. According to my research, women and men were economically very different. Men could have a lot of things, but women were restricted to be opulent.

It must really have sucked to be a woman in Greece. I read that only men could vote and take part in the government (although it was a democracy). But if we look at Greek myths, we see that a lot of women were actually pretty smart... (Hopefully I'm in the right time period) Women like Helen, Cassandra...etc. I wonder what it means...

Women are much better treated now. However, I believe that the role women play now is kind of similar to that of Ancient Greece. Many women now still have to take care kids. Most political leaders are still men. We have improved, but we haven't reached there yet. Time has change, but the unchangeable still exists.

Actually, even those women weren't given much of a part. Cassandra was ignored, then given to the Greek conquerors as a slave/concubine. Helen wasn't given nearly as many lines as any of the Greek men in Homer's work, not even when she was the cause of the war.

Women were nothing more than property, really.
